Cold storage, cold rooms and clean rooms are judged by one thing: how well they hold temperature. That makes the choice of insulation material critical. Here is how PUF and Rockwool compare for cold applications.
PUF — the cold storage specialist
PUF (polyurethane foam) has one of the lowest thermal conductivities of any practical insulation material (0.020-0.024 W/mK). For the same performance, you need roughly half the thickness of other materials. That means more usable storage space, lighter walls and lower refrigeration load. PUF panels come with GI or aluminium facing, which acts as the vapour barrier and structural skin.
Rockwool — when fire rating leads
Rockwool is non-combustible (A1 rated) and performs well on large structural elements, but it is less efficient per millimetre than PUF and absolutely must have a vapour barrier on the warm side in cold services. It suits cold applications where fire safety requirements dominate or where PUF is restricted by insurance or code.

The real cost difference
PUF panels cost more per square metre, but because you need less thickness and the facing is built in, total installed cost is usually competitive — and the running cost is lower for the life of the room.
